The recently-presented 2019 vintage of Finca El Otero, the top wine of our Áster winery, could not have had a better debut. The Fuera de Serie supplement of the Expansión financial newspaper recently published a selection by the renowned taster Federico Oldemburg of the 21 best Ribera del Duero wines, which he terms “a sample of the enormous wealth of the viticulture of this region.”
At the top of the list is this new vintage of Finca El Otero “whose round, gentle and creamy expression comes from the vineyard it was named after, where the same Tempranillo vines have been grown for more than 70 years. This great [Ribera del] Duero red, which is only produced in vintages of exceptional quality, now coexists with the winery's new labels, with a distinct and equally interesting profile, such as the new Áster El Espino.”
The jewel in the winery's crown, Finca El Otero has been dazzling audiences and critics for several vintages thanks to its brilliant interpretation of the classicism of this acclaimed Spanish wine region. The 2019 vintage was chosen Wine of the Year by Tim Atkin MW with 97 points. It was among James Suckling’s Top 100 wines of Spain in 2018 and rated Best Red in the World by The Wine Merchant in 2021. If anything defines Finca El Otero, it is its self-demanding consistency.
This magnificent red wine comes from the delicate grapes of a single vineyard, Finca El Otero. Made with grapes from 70-year-old vines, it proves amiable and creamy, with great breadth and complexity, with a smooth entry that is manifested in spicy and balsamic notes. It is an archetypal Ribera del Duero, aged for 16 months in new French oak barrels. It is only made with exceptional vintages, such as this 2019.
Finca El Otero is a true child of a terroir that speaks of the continental character of Anguix, the Burgos town where the Áster winery is located. It features smooth, sweet tannins, the result of delicate pumpovers and a vineyard that naturally gives silky wines.
